Samford Scraps with JSU, Wins 68-61
Jan. 20, 2001
BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - Derrick Jones scored 17 and Samford shot 87.5 percent from the field in the second half as the Bulldogs defeated Jacksonville State 68-61 in Trans America Athletic Conference basketball Saturday. The second-half performance by Samford (9-8, 6-2 TAAC) was one of its best this season. Offensively Samford shot 14-of-16 in the second half, while limiting Jacksonville State (6-11, 3-5 TAAC) to 36 percent shooting and forcing 19 Gamecock turnovers for the game. The Bulldogs entered the contest second in the nation in three-pointers per game, but shot only 6-of-11, including 3-for-3 in the second period. Samford's leading scorer, senior Marc Salyers, scored 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 2-for-2 from three-point range. The Bulldog bench also contributed 19 points. JSU's leading scorer, Mike McDaniel, scored a game-high 24 points and Johnny Kilpatrick and Brant Harriman each contributed 11 for the Gamecocks. JSU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and led 11-3 at the 14:50 mark of the opening period. But Samford went on a 21-8 run of its own over the next eight minutes, taking a 24-19 lead with five minutes remaining until the half. JSU battled to a 30-29 lead with 37 second left, but two Cornell Felton free throws gave the Bulldogs a 31-10 halftime lead. Salyers led both teams with 11 first-half points and McDaniel added 10 for the Gamecocks.
A layup by McDaniel gave JSU a 36-34 lead at the 15-minute mark of the second period, and a three-pointer by Kilpatrick would give JSU their last lead two minutes later, 39-38, with 13:32 remaining in the game. Samford used a 19-8 run over the next eight minutes to gain its largest lead of the game, 57-44, with 5:43 left in the contest. JSU battled back again, however, as Kilpatrick converted a three-pointer and a foul into four quick points for the Gamecocks and JSU sunk eight consecutive free throws to cut the SU lead to 61-57 with 2:37 remaining. Free throws down the stretch from Chris Weaver, Felton and Jones iced the 68-61 victory for Samford.
The Bulldogs have little time to enjoy their sixth TAAC victory, however, as they travel to Buies Creek, N.C., to face Campbell at 6 p.m. on Mon., Jan. 22. The game will be broadcast on WAPI-AM 1070, WVSU-FM 91.1 and www.samfordsports.com.
