BULLDOGS SET RECORDS IN 94-47 WIN
Jan. 13, 2001 BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford made 23 three-pointers to break the Trans America Athletic Conference and the school record for three-pointers made in a game and freshman Tyson Dorsey scored 21 points, all in the second half, as the Bulldogs downed Troy State 94-47 on Saturday. Dorsey's 7-for-9 performance earned him career highs in points, made field goals, made three pointers and tied a career best of 17 minutes played. Cornell Felton also recorded highs to help the Bulldogs, posting career best of 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting and seven assists. Samford's 23 three-pointers broke the TAAC record which it set in a 98-76 win over Southeastern Louisiana on Jan. 16, 1995. Samford (8-8, 5-2) never trailed in the game, exploiting Troy State's (6-9, 2-4) zone defense with red-hot perimeter shooting. The Bulldogs led by as many as 17 in the first half, and blew the game open in the second, scoring 56 points and shooting 13-of-21 (.619) from the arc while the Trojans stubbornly refused to come out of the zone. The Bulldogs played 15 minutes without their leading scorer, Marc Salyers, but still had five players in double figures in scoring. Chris Weaver scored 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from three-point range, Salyers added 17, and Derrick Jones scored 12 . Samford knocked down 10 three-pointers in the first half, shooting 10-of-18 from beyond the arc and 48 percent from the field. The Bulldogs were also up to the task defensively, holding Troy State to 33 percent shooting for the game and outrebounded TSU 39-30.
Samford opened the second half with a 22-7 run that put them up by 33, 62-29, at the 13:41 mark, shooting 13 of the its 20 second-half shots from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs put runs of 10-4, 12-0 and 27-13 on TSU to blow the game wide open in the second period, and Dorsey began his onslaught at the 8:32 mark, hitting a trey that pushed the SU lead to 35, 73-38. Dorsey scored 21 of Samford's final 24 points in just over seven minutes, knocking down seven consecutive three-pointers from the 8:32 mark to 1:35 when he made his final basket.
The Bulldogs also received five points and five rebounds from Sebastian Sachse, four points from and a shared game-high seven rebounds from Corey Green, three points from Will Gardner and two points and seven rebounds from Gabe Skypala. The Bulldogs do not play again until Jan. 20, when they host Jacksonville State at 2:00 p.m. at Seibert Hall.
