Belmont Outshoots Men's Hoops, 66-60
Jan. 12, 2002 NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Adam Sonn scored 21 points and Belmont shot 56 percent from the three-point line as the Bruins defeated Samford 66-60 in Atlantic Sun Conference basketball on Saturday. Belmont (8-7, 5-3 A-Sun) held A-Sun leader Samford (9-7, 6-2 A-Sun) to 20 percent shooting from the three-point line in the second half while the Bruins went on a 13-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 51-38, with12:16 left in the game. The Bulldogs drew to within six, 63-57, after Cornell Felton knocked down a three-pointer with 1:16 remaining in the game. Belmont knocked down three of four free throws in the final 42 seconds to seal the victory. Adam Sonn led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 8-of-12 from the field. Three other Bruins scored in double figures, including Wes Burtner's 16 points, Steve Drabyn with 14 and Wil Howard Downs with 10. Cornell Felton led the Bulldogs with 14 points and Bryan Boerjan scored 13 and dished out four assists in his first career start. Boerjan started for Samford's ill center, Phillip Ramelli, and the Bulldogs lost forward Jon Mills for the game with a sprained ankle in the first half. The Bruins shot 57.9 percent from the field for the game and 56 percent from the three-point line, including a blistering 72 percent from beyond the arc in the first half. Belmont outrebounded Samford 22-16 and outshot the Bulldogs from the free throw line, the Bruins knocking down 13 of 16 while Samford was 3 of 4.
Belmont jumped out to a quick start against the Bulldogs in the first half, taking a 11-4 lead and led by as many as seven on five occasions in the first half. Burtner scored 11 first-half points to spark the Bruins and Sonn and Drabyn each contributed nine points in the first period.
Despite the Bruins' hot shooting in the first half, they only led 35-33 at halftime. Samford returns to action next week, hosting Campbell on Jan. 17, and Georgia State on Jan. 19. |
