BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) - Marc Salyers led all scorers with 23 points and added nine rebounds to lead Samford to a 66-43 win over Florida Atlantic in a Trans America Athletic Conference battle.

Samford (6-7, 3-1 in the TAAC) held FAU (3-11, 2-1) to 14 first-half points and shot 54.5 percent from the field. Salyers dominated in the post early for the Bulldogs, scoring nine of Samford's first 14 points and tallying 14 first-half points. Samford's defense, meanwhile, forced FAU into 27.4 percent shooting and 15 turnovers, including 18.2 percent in the first half.

Samford recorded 22 assists but was out-rebounded by FAU 39-33, including a 17-3 deficit on the offensive boards that led to 20 second-chance points for the Owls. The Bulldogs jumped out to an 11-0 lead and cruised through much of the first half, but poor offensive execution caused SU to go scoreless for the last 4:30 of the first half.

"The first part of the first half was excellent, but then we forgot how we got the lead and went away from it," said Samford Head Coach Jimmy Tillette. "We called time out and then committed four consecutive turnovers because we kept trying to be tricky and we didn't need to be. And we still have to do a better job on turnovers."

Derrick Jones scored 11 points for Samford, and Chris Weaver added eight points and tied the game high with nine rebounds, while Cornell Felton also scored eight, Will Gardner scored a career-high five points, Gabe Skypala added four, Sebastian Sachse contributed three and Tyson Dorsey and Corey Green each had two points.

FAU was led by Jeff Cowans, who scored 17 points and had nine rebounds, both team highs. It was the sixth time he led the Owls in scoring and the third time he led the team in rebounds. Samford returns to action on Monday, Jan. 8, facing the UCF Golden Knights in Orlando at 6:00 p.m. (CDT).
