2008 Season Recap

Overall 33-23, OVC 19-7

Despite losing a majority of the teams offensive production to graduation the year before, the 2008 squad finished the year by winning the most regular season games of any team in school history and producing the highest draft pick in the program's history. Ultimately, the finish was not what the team wanted losing out in the OVC tournament, but it was still another season filled with program firsts.

The Bulldogs defeated St. Louis 8-5 on March 1 and would not lose another home game until dropping a decision on April 23. Along the way, the team would win 16 consecutive contests, longest home winning streak in the nation at the time with home wins over Troy, Mercer, Georgia State, and all 6 conference games. The night before the streak ended, the Dogs kept another streak going with a 12-11 victory over Auburn. The win gave Samford 4 consecutive seasons with a win over Auburn.

The team went 6-5 against teams that went on to the 2008 NCAA Tournament. The winning season was the third consecutive winning season for the program for the first time since the 1960's. The Dogs closed out the season at 23-4 at home. In June, junior shortstop Mikey Marseco was selected in the 11th round by the Brewers making him the highest drafted player in the history of the program. Marseco was also selected as a third time All Conference player and the Co-Player of the Year. Junior Jonathan Stephens finished the year undefeated at 7-0, having his season cut short a few weeks do to arm trouble.
