The Move To The Southern Conference

The 2008 season will be the last for Samford in the Ohio Valley Conference. Starting in the fall of 2008, the entire Samford athletic department and its programs will begin play in the Southern Conference. The move has set off another level of excitement for a baseball program that had already begun to fly to new heights the last couple of seasons.

The Southern Conference is yearly a top 10 conference, considered amongst the best in the nation. The conference regularly receives multiple bids into the NCAA Tournament and had a Super Regional participant in the 2006 season. The change will also mark a move to the normal three day weekends with games on the more traditional Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The stadiums are incredible from one university to the other where the Bulldogs will be playing in front of large crowds each weekend.

Head Coach Casey Dunn says he and the staff are ecstatic over the move, "It's a move to a top ten conference. The challenge will certainly be greater, but we are all in this to not only win but to be successful in reaching the NCAA Tournament and give yourself an opportunity to advance. The Southern Conference increases our opportunities to get to the NCAAs. It will immediately effect recruiting in a positive way. Kids want to play in the nicest stadiums against outstanding competition, but they also want a good shot to make the tournament. This move is a huge plus for this program."

So coming off the two best seasons in Samford history, a conference championship, major league draft pick, and a resurfaced playing field, the program is adding a press box construction, three million dollar indoor hitting facility, and move to the Southern Conference. The rapid progress continues for the Samford Baseball Program.
