Marseco Selected In 11th Round Of Major League Baseball Draft

June 6, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford junior shortstop Michael Marseco was drafted with the 17th pick in the 11th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday.

Marseco, the 338th pick overall, is the highest drafted player ever from Samford. Wendell Magee was drafted in the 12th round of the 1994 draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

After just three years at Samford, Marseco ranks third in school history in career hits (247), batting average (.353) and runs scored (132). He also ranks eighth in school history in career doubles with 37.

This season, Marseco set modern Samford records for single-season hits (93) and batting average (.419). His eight triples this season rank second on the school's single-season list.

At the conclusion of the season, Marseco was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Co-Player of the Year. He was also named first-team All-OVC for the third year in a row.

As a sophomore in 2007, Marseco set the school record for single-season at-bats with 240. His 84 hits as a sophomore rank third in Samford history.

Marseco's selection in the draft marks the second year in a row a Samford player has been selected in the draft. Last season, Relief pitcher Joseph Edens was selected in the 44th round by the San Francisco Giants.
