BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball coaching staff has added another signee for the 2008 signing class, head coach Casey Dunn announced Tuesday. Dayne Cutrell, a right-handed pitcher from Gulf Coast Community College has signed to play with the Bulldogs.

"Dayne has pitched for two years in one of the top junior college conferences," Dunn said. "He has had success at the college level and has tremendous size and velocity. He is an outstanding student and will represent our program well."

Dayne Cutrell (RHP, 6-5, 220, Gulf Coast CC, Mobile, Ala.) is a hard-throwing pitcher who led Gulf Coast Community College in appearances this season in Panama City, Fla. During his sophomore season, he threw over 33 innings while striking out 24 batters, holding batters to a .254 average and allowing only three extra-base hits in his 21 appearances during the season. He helped Gulf Coast to a 31-19 overall record.

Cutrell started his college career by throwing 33 innings his freshman season, striking out 21, walking only six and picking up three wins including a victory of eventual junior college national champion Chipola Community College. His team finished the year at 32-16 and qualified for regional play in Florida.

Cutrell was a dominant two-sport athlete at UMS Wright in Mobile, Ala. He was 7-1 his senior year with 58 strikeouts, 11 walks and a 2.12 earned run average. He was also a leader on the basketball court where he scored over 1,200 points in his career while averaging 19 points and 11 rebounds per game.

His experience and potential velocity are expected to be assets for the bulldogs to allow him to contribute immediately.

There will be more signees announced in the near future to finalize this recruiting class. The 2008 class is the fourth class under Dunn and his staff. The first three groups were all nationally-ranked recruiting classes.
