Stephen Artz Named OVC Pitcher Of The Week

April 26, 2004

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford's Stephen Artz was named the Ohio Valley Conference's Pitcher of the Week when the league announced its weekly honors Monday afternoon.

In three appearances last week, Artz earned two wins and a save for the Bulldogs. The sophomore righthander opened with a five-inning start at Alabama, giving up two runs on four hits while earning the win. He then came on in relief in the first game of the Bulldogs' series at Eastern Kentucky, surrendering just one hit over the final 1.2 innings for his first save of the season. He helped Samford complete the three-game sweep at EKU on Sunday, giving up two runs on six hits while fanning nine batters in 8.1 innings.

In two outings at EKU, Artz held the league's top offensive team to a .206 batting average. For the week, Artz allowed four runs on 11 hits, striking out 15 batters and walking three in 15.0 innings of work on the hill.

Artz and the Bulldogs will return to action when they take on the 19th-ranked Auburn Tigers on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
