Wassermann Named CBI National Player of the Week
April 9, 2003 Senior right-hander Ehren Wassermann earned his second honor of the week Wednesday when he was named the CollegeBaseBallInsider.com National Player of the Week Wednesday. Wassermann and Jacksonville State pitcher Jesse Corn were named Atlantic Sun Co-Pitcher-of-the-Week Monday. Wassermann, who prepped at Sylacauga High School in Sylacauga Ala., earned A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for the first time this season by posting three wins in three appearances last week. He opened the week with a seven-inning shutout of Alabama A&M, allowing just four hits with a career-high nine strikeouts in the victory. Wassermann entered the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Troy State in the top of the seventh inning and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing only three hits to earn the win.
Wassermann turned around and started game two of the doubleheader. He threw a complete-game seven-inning effort to earn his third win of the week. He allowed just one run and five hits over seven innings while striking out three. It was also the first time since the 2001 season that a Bulldog pitcher picked up two wins in a doubleheader. Ty Dedmon defeated Mercer, 7-6 and 3-1 during the 2001 season. On the week, Wassermann threw 17 2/3 innings, striking out 15 batters and allowing just one run (0.51 ERA) on 12 hits. Wassermann improved his record to 4-5 on the season while Samford (9-23, 4-14) earned its first A-Sun Series win of the season.
