Wassermann Named A-Sun Co-Pitcher of the Week
April 7, 2003 Macon, Ga. - Senior right-hander Ehren Wassermann and Jacksonville State's Jessie Corn were named the Atlantic Sun Co-Pitchers-of-the-Week on Monday afternoon after earning key wins in conference play this past weekend. Wassermann earned two wins for Samford on Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Troy State and Corn threw his fourth straight shutout in A-Sun play. Wassermann, who prepped at Sylacauga High School in Sylacauga Ala., earned A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for the first time this season by posting three wins in three appearances last week. He opened the week with a seven-inning shutout of Alabama A&M, allowing just four hits with a career-high nine strikeouts in the victory. Wassermann entered the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Troy State in the top of the seventh inning and pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings allowing only three hits to earn the win. Wassermann turned around and started game two of the doubleheader. He threw a complete-game seven-inning effort to earn his third win of the week. He allowed just one run and five hits over seven innings while striking out three. It was also the first time since the 2001 season that a Bulldog pitcher picked up two wins in a doubleheader. Ty Dedmon defeated Mercer, 7-6 and 3-1 during the 2001 season. On the week, Wassermann threw 17 2/3 innings, striking out 15 batters and allowing just one run (0.51 ERA) on 12 hits. Wassermann improved his record to 4-5 on the season while Samford (9-23, 4-14) earned its first A-Sun Series win of the season. Corn, a junior right-hander from Villa Rica, Ga., earns A-Sun Pitcher-of-the-Week honors for the third time this season. Corn combined for his fourth straight shutout this past Friday as Jacksonville State (20-14, 12-6) blanked Gardner-Webb, 9-0. Friday night's showdown featured the league's two lowest ERA's and Corn won the showdown with eight innings of four-hit ball to go along with a career-high 13 strikeouts. The win marked Corn's sixth straight victory to improve his overall record to 6-1 with a league-low 1.33 ERA.
Samford returns to action this weekend traveling to Gardner-Webb for a three-game conference series. Jacksonville State, who currently is ranked second in the A-Sun Standings, returns to play this weekend when the Gamecocks travel to Troy State for a key three-game A-Sun series.
