BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Michael Collins drove in the game-tying and game-winning runs to give Samford a 5-4 win in game one, but Troy State outhit Samford 11-6 and a Trojan home run by Drew Miller secured a 5-3 TSU win in game two and a split of Saturday's double header at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
The Troy State (26-26, 12-15) series win unseated Samford (20-34, 12-15) from the sixth spot in the Trans America Athletic Conference standings, sending the Trojans instead of the Bulldogs to the conference tournament that begins May 16th.
In game one, Collins sent a two-out single up the middle to score Robert Evans who had reached on a walk and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch by Trojan ace Jason Bernard. Samford led in the first inning of both games, but trailed 4-2 in game one before doubles by Philip Holmes and Robert Evans got things going in the sixth. Collins flied out to right field to score Evans from second and an uneventful seventh inning from both teams forced the extra stanza. Philip Holmes went 3-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs and senior Ty Dedmon (5-6) picked up the win, allowing only one hit and no runs in six and a third innings of work in relief of starter Major Allred. Bernard (10-4) took the loss for TSU.
Game two went back and forth through the first three innings, as Samford led 1-0 in the first, then regained the lead 2-1 in the second and 3-2 after three. After the third inning the Bulldogs' bats went nearly silent, as Eric Wikstrom hurled three no-hit innings while the Trojan plated runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 4-3. Miller's solo home run in the seventh gave TSU insurance and a 5-3 lead, and Aaron Kirkland squelched a two-out Bulldog rally by getting pinch-hitter Josh Rhodes to ground out to end the game. Josh Kendrick was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead TSU, while Cory Sumner was 3-for-3 for the Bulldogs. Charlie Crabbe (2-4) took the loss for Samford, while Wikstrom (4-5) got the win for TSU.
