BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Josh Kendrick went 4-for-5 with a home run to propel Troy State past Samford, 9-7, in game one of both team's last but crucial Trans America Athletic Conference series of the regular season.
Samford (19-33, 11-14) must win both games of Saturday's double header to advance to the TACC Tournament, while Troy State (25-25, 11-14) needs only one win to clinch the sixth and final spot in the tournament.
The Bulldogs took an early 5-0 lead in the first inning, propelled by consecutive home runs by Robert Evans and Philip Holmes. Troy State returned the favor in the second, scoring five of its own to even the game at 5-5. Samford added a run in the second to lead again, but scored only one more for the game as Trojan reliever Aaron Kirkland kept the Bulldogs in check. Kendrick's home run in the fourth gave the Trojans the go ahead runs, 8-6, and proved to be the game winner as TSU never trailed again en route to the 9-7 win.
Kirlkland pitched eight innings in relief of Mickey Oquinn, scattering four hits and allowing only one unearned run. He also walked three and struck out four. Derek Tharpe (1-8) took the loss for the Bulldogs, striking out a career-high nine batters in five and a third innings of work. Samford allowed nine runs on 11 hits and committed two errors, and the Bulldogs recorded 14 strikeouts as a staff.
Joe Denson and Major Allred were 2-for-4 and Allred tallied two RBI to lead the Bulldogs. No other Trojans recorded multiple hits but seven tallied hits in the game.
The teams return to Joe Lee Griffin Field at 1 p.m. on Senior Day for the final two games of the regular season.
