ATLANTA, Ga. - Samford posted five-run innings in both games of Saturday's double header, defeating Georgia State 8-4 and 12-2 and sweeping the Trans America Athletic Conference series at DeKalb South Field.
The sweep is the second of the season for Samford (19-31, 11-13), keeping them in the hunt for a TAAC tournament berth heading into next weekend's meeting with Troy State. The Bulldogs have won eight of their last nine TAAC games
Philip Holmes went 3-for-4 in game one, including a bases-clearing double that was part of a big fourth inning for Samford, and tallied four RBI to lead Samford to an 8-4 victory. The Bulldogs took control of the game leading 3-1 in the fourth, plating five runs on three hits and with the help of two Georgia State (20-31, 8-15) errors. Jared Smith (2-2) picked up a complete game win for Samford, allowing four runs on six hits while tying a career high with nine strikeouts. Sae Evans was 2-for-3 and Joe Denson also scored twice for Samford. Jay Fields went 4-for-4 and hit for the cycle to account for one run and four of GSU's six hits.
In game two, Robert Evans went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs and Samford took advantage of timely hits and GSU mistakes for the 9-2 win. GSU pitching struggled in game two, totaling six hit batsmen, five wild pitches and three walks, while TAAC Pitcher of the Week Ty Dedmon struck out seven and allowed only two runs on three hits. Singles by Sae Evans and Robert Evans, along with two hit batsmen and a GSU error, gave Samford a comfortable 5-0 lead after three. Samford added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and finished the game with two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh. Robert Evans and Sae Evans each went 2-for-4 and R. Evans tallied four RBI to led the Bulldogs.
Samford returns to Birmingham to play at UAB at 7 p.m. on May 8, then hosts Troy State at Joe Lee Griffin Field in the last regular season series, May 11-12.
