Baseball Drops First Game Of Series At Eastern Kentucky

May 3, 2008

Box Score

RICHMOND, Ky. - Eastern Kentucky's Christian Friedrich gave up just one hit over 8.0 innings as the Colonel baseball team defeated Samford, 10-0, Saturday afternoon at Turkey Hughes Field. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was postponed due to inclement weather, and the teams will now play two seven-inning contests on Sunday.

"Friedrich is a special talent and a special competitor," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "But, we didn't compete today. I didn't feel like we were mentally here today. We weren't ready to play and there was zero intensity, and that is my fault and our coaches' fault for not doing a good job of having them ready to play."

Samford's lone hit came in the second inning when Bear Burnett doubled down the left-field line. Burnett's double marked Samford's only base runner of the game. Michael Marseco had his Samford-record 29-game hitting streak snapped, as he was 0-for-3 at the plate Saturday.

Trent Hill started on the mound for Samford and pitched 6.1 innings, giving up eight runs on 10 hits and striking out seven batters to take the loss.

For EKU, Friedrich struck out nine Samford batters while walking none. Joe Oliver was 4-for-5 with a home run, a double and four RBI. Matt Davis was 3-for-4 with three RBI, and Aaron Barrows was 3-for-5 with two RBI for EKU.

Eastern Kentucky scored two runs in the second inning on Oliver's two-run homer. The Colonels then added a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to make the score 4-0.

The Colonels pulled away with six runs in the seventh inning to make the score 10-0. Oliver and Davis drove in two runs each, and Barrows drove in one run in the inning for EKU.

Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. Central time, and both games can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samford.edu/groups/wvsu/. Fans can also follow both games on the internet via GameTracker at the links below.
