Georgia State Downs Baseball, 12-4

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Samford baseball team fell at Georgia State by a score of 12-4 in a non-conference game Wednesday night.

With the loss, Samford drops t 27-17 on the season. The Panthers improve their record to 26-18 with the win.

Bo Smith went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Samford at the plate. Shortstop Michael Marseco was 1-for-3 at the plate, extending his career-long hitting streak to 29 games. Grant Sides pitched 1.2 innings, giving up six runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound. Sides was the first of five pitchers used for Samford in the game.

For Georgia State, Jonathan Kolowich, Chase Childers and Derek Simmons had two hits each. Adam Knight pitched 5.0 innings, giving up four runs on four hits to pick up the win for the Panthers.

Georgia State jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning and five more in the second for a 6-0 lead. Kolowich scored on a Samford wild pitch for the run in the first inning. In the second inning, Bradley Logan drove in two runs, and Daniel Merck, Kolowich and Childers drove in a run each for a six-run Panther lead.

Samford put its first run on the scoreboard in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 6-1. Wayne Miller was hit by a pitch, and P.J. Fandetti and Alex Godshall walked to load the bases. Michael Johnson was then hit by a pitch to bring Miller home to cut GSU's lead to five runs.

The Panthers then plated two runs in the bottom of the third inning, and two more in the fourth to push their lead to 10-1.

Samford added three runs in the top of the fifth inning to make the score 10-4. Godshall scored the first run of the inning when Bill Whitehead grounded into a double play. Bear Burnett and Smith drove in the final two runs of the inning for Samford.

The Panthers added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to make the final score 12-4.

Samford will return to action on Saturday, when the Bulldogs play an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Eastern Kentucky, beginning at 12 p.m. Central. The teams will also play a single game Sunday at 12 p.m. Central. All three games game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.samford.edu/groups/wvsu/.
