EKU Downs Samford, 7-2
April 24, 2002 RICHMOND, Ky. - - Junior right fielder Robert Evans went 3-for-4 at the plate, but it wasn't enough as Eastern Kentucky completed a two-game sweep of Samford Wednesday afternoon at Turkey-Hughes Field. Samford fell to 21-22 while EKU improved to 12-27. The Colonels recorded 11 hits off five different Bulldog pitchers. Samford had seven hits, but left 11 runners on base and couldn't capitalize on four EKU errors. Eastern Kentucky scored one run in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead. The Bulldogs finally got on the board, when junior first baseman Heath Owen hit his eighth home run of the season, as Samford trailed 3-1. The Colonels extended their lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning. The Colonels added one run in the sixth and eigth innings to take a 7-1 lead. The Bulldogs final run in the top of the ninth came when Michael Collins, who singled, scored on an error by the second baseman. Sumner, Sae Evans, Owen and Collins each had one hit. Travis Crossland took the loss in his first collegiate start. Crossland gave up two runs in 1.2 innings pitched. Lee Brady also saw his first action as a Bulldog a allowed two runs on four hits while striking out one. Josh Anderson led EKU going 3-for-5 at the plate. Josh Thomas was credited with win as he gave up one run on five hits while striking out five in six innings of work.
Samford returns home to host Georgia St. in a key Atlantic Sun Conference series this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
