Baseball Holds Off BSC, 6-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Robert Evans and Eric Hollis each recorded two hits and Karl Huch limited Birmingham-Southern to two runs in seven innings to pick up his fourth win as Samford knocked off the Panthers, 6-3, at Joe Lee Griffin Field Tuesday night. Samford ran its record to 13-27 while BSC fell to 26-14 on the season.

Huch (4-0) allowed the two runs in the top of the fifth and held the Panthers to seven hits. Stephen Artz struck out three of the nine batters he faced in the final two innings and gave up one run. Chad Durden (3-2) took the loss for Birmingham-Southern. Durden allowed three earned runs on five hits in the first inning. Robert Evans and Hollis each went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Hollis chipped in two RBI. Adam Pease, Michael Wydner and Jonathan Sanford all had two hits for BSC.

Samford scored five runs in the bottom of the first to take the early 5-0 lead on five hits and three BSC errors. With one out, Michael Collins reached second on an error by the first baseman. Robert Evans followed with a single to center field moving Collins to third. Justin Klinger singled through the left side to score Collins. After Sae Evans's infield single, Robert Evans scored on a throwing error by Jared Walker to make it 2-0. Hollis' two-run single plated Klinger and Sae Evans for a 4-0 Bulldog lead. Heath Owen doubled to right center scoring Hollis for the final run of the inning.
 

 

Birmingham-Southern cut into its deficit in the top of the fifth. Walker reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Scott Asher doubled in Walker to make it, 5-1. Wydner doubled down the right field line to plate Asher as BSC only trailed, 5-2.

The Bulldogs added one run in the bottom of the seventh. Joe Denson walked and moved to second when Matt Alling was hit by a pitch. Denson scored on Robert Evans' double giving the Bulldogs a four-run lead, 6-2.

BSC pulled closer in the top of the ninth. Walker singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sanford doubled down the left field line scoring Walker pulling BSC within, 6-3. Artz got Wydner to fly out to center field ending the game.

Klinger, Sae Evans, Owen and Denson each had one hit for Samford. BSC out-hit Samford, 10-8, but the Panthers committed three errors.

Samford heads to Birmingham-Southern Wednesday for a 7 p.m. first-pitch at Scrushy-Striplin Field.
