MARTIN, Tenn. - For the second time in as many games, Samford sophomore center fielder Sae Evans hit a pair of home runs in a game. Tuesday's effort led the Bulldogs to a 6-4 win on Wednesday and a two-game sweep of UT-Martin.
Evans hit a solo home run to lead off the sixth inning and break a scoreless tie, then added a two-run homer in Samford's five-run seventh. For the two-game series, Evans was 5-for-9 from the plate with two home runs, seven RBI and he scored four runs. He is now the team leader in home runs with six.
Samford (11-27) led 1-0 when the Bulldogs erupted for five runs on five hits in the seventh against UT-Martin (6-33) pitchers Justin Entrekin and T.J. Allen. Evans' second home run scored Eric Hollis who reached with a double, then Cory Sumner singled and advanced to second on a UT-Martin error. Robert Evans was intentionally walked, then Grant Caldwell singled and advanced to third on another Skyhawk error. Robert Evans and Sumner scored, and a Jason Livermore single scored Caldwell to give the Bulldogs a comfortable 6-0 lead.
Martin posed a rally in the seventh and eighth innings, as Brad Meadows homered in the seventh and the Skyhawks plated three runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth. Charlie Crabbe relieved Jared Smith in the ninth to close out the game and pick up his first save of the season. Bulldog starter Matt Fields gets the win and evens his record at 1-1, allowing only four hits and one run while striking out six in seven innings of work. UT-Martin touched middle reliever Jared Smith for three runs in an inning of work in the eighth.
Samford remains on the road for a three-game Trans America Athletic Conference series this weekend, April 20-21, at Jacksonville State.
