BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jacksonville used three home runs in game two of a double header to hand Samford its first shutout of the season, 10-0, and claim the Trans America Athletic Conference series 2-1 at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
In game one, Samford (9-27, 3-12) took the early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Robert Evans doubled to score Sae Evans who reached with a lead-off double. Samford blew the game open in the fifth as freshman shortstop Joe Denson blasted a grand slam, his second home run of the season, for a 5-0 lead. Bulldog starter Jared Smith(1-1) got the win for Samford, pitching five scoreless innings until Jacksonville (25-14, 16-6) threatened late in the game. JU scored two in the sixth on Smith and one in the seventh on reliever Ty Dedmon, who picked up his first save of the season. Joe Denson led the Bulldogs offensively with a 2-for-3 outing.
Jacksonville drew first blood in game two, scoring two runs in the fourth on Bulldog starter Major Allred. The Dolphins blew the game open in the fifth and sixth, scoring eight runs with consecutive four-run, four-hit innings on relievers Derek Tharpe and Shane Weeks. Three different Dolphins hit home runs for JU, including Jami Rodgers who went 2-for-3 with four RBI. Cory Sumner led Samford at the plate with a 2-for-3 outing. Major Allred (4-5) took the loss for the Bulldogs, while Casey Shumaker (5-4) got the win for JU.
Samford plays at UT-Martin April 17-18, then heads to Jacksonville State for a three-game series April 20-21.
