STARKVILLE, Miss. - The Samford baseball team fell, 13-1, to 22nd-ranked Mississippi State Wednesday night at Dudy-Noble Field.

Mississippi State (22-8) took the lead early with a run in the top of the first inning. Joseph Hunter singled to left field to drive in Brad Corley, who had earlier doubled, for the game's first run.

In the second inning, Mississippi State added two runs to push its lead to 3-0. Ed Easley doubled down the right-field line to drive in Thomas Berkery and Brian LaNinfa for the three-run MSU lead.

Samford (9-22) came back with a run in the top of the third to cut the MSU lead to 3-1. Justin Worthington, who had earlier reached base on an error, scored on another error for Samford's lone run of the game.

Mississippi State plated two more runs in the fifth inning to make the score 5-1. Berkery singled up the middle with the bases loaded to drive in Jeff Butts and Corley for the inning's two runs.

MSU plated eight runs in the sixth inning to put the game away, giving the Bulldogs a 13-1 lead.

Samford was led at the plate by Jeff Dils, going 2-for-4. Scott Fowler took the loss on the mound for Samford. Fowler gave up a run on three hits in 1.0 inning of work.

Samford will return to action on Saturday, April 16, when the Bulldogs open a three-game Ohio Valley Conference series at Eastern Illinois. The teams will play a doubleheader, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
