Baseball Splits with GWU, 5-4 and 4-3
April 12, 2003 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - - Robert Evans led Samford going 2-for-3 with one RBI in game one and David Futrelle hit a walk-off double for Gardner-Webb in the bottom of the seventh in game two as Samford (10-24, 5-15 A-Sun) split the doubleheader with GWU (21-15, 11-9 A-Sun), 5-4 and 4-3, Saturday afternoon at Varsity Field. Gardner-Webb overcame three errors in game two to win. Stephen Artz (0-5) suffered the loss allowing three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings while striking out three. Josh Martin (5-4) earned the win for Gardner-Webb allowing two earned runs on eight hits. Michael Collins led the Bulldogs going 3-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Sae Evans added two hits for Samford. Futrelle went 2-for-2 with two RBI in the game. Jay Bennett also had two hits. Bennett singled in Sammy Styers in the bottom of the first giving the Runnin' Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Collins homered to left center in the top of the second tying the game. Joe Denson followed with a single and stole second. Denson scored on error by the shortstop as the Bulldogs led, 2-1. Ehren Wassermann's RBI single up the middle scored Collins for a 3-1 Samford lead in the top of the fourth. Billy McCarson's first career home run pulled Gardner-Webb within 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth. Futrelle tied the game, 3-3, when he homered to left field in the bottom of the sixth. After Martin stopped a Samford threat in the top of the seventh, Clay Abernathy singled with one out. After Wassermann got Styers to fly out to right field, Futrelled doubled in the winning run.
In game one, Samford used a four-run sixth inning to rally for the 5-4 win. Alan Bryan (1-4) picked up his first win of the season allowing three earned runs in 6 1/3 innings pitched. Bryan also struck out four. Ehren Wassermann picked up his first save of the season in relief.
The Bulldogs trailed 3-1 heading into the top of the sixth. Sae Evans doubled and moved to second when Robert Evans walked. Justin Klinger singled to center field to load the bases. With one out, Richard Bishop hit a three-run double putting Samford ahead 4-3. Michael Collins singled through the right side making it, 5-3. Gardner-Webb pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh on Sam Bradford's RBI single, but Wassermann retired the final batter to pick up the save. Bradford put Gardner-Webb ahead 1-0 with a solo home run to left center in the bottom of the third. Robert Evans' second home run of the season tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth. A pair of RBI-singles by Jim Glueckert and Jon David Milford put GWU back ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth. Robert Evans led Samford going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI. Joe Denson also went 2-for-3. Bishop finished 1-for-2 with three RBI. Bradford led GWU going 3-for-4 with two RBI and one RBI. Glueckert finished 3-for-3. Samford and Gardner-Webb wrap up the series Sunday at 1 p.m. with a nine-inning game.
