BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford baseball team swept a doubleheader from Austin Peay Sunday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Bulldogs won game one, 1-0 in 10 innings, while Samford took the second game by a score of 4-3.

"I think our kids took a good approach today," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "We made some big plays, and we played really well defensively in the first game. We got three wins this weekend against a very good team."

The win gives Samford the series sweep over the Governors and improves Samford's record to 18-15 overall and 8-1 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Austin Peay drops to 19-12 overall and 4-5 in league play.

In game one, scheduled for seven innings, the teams went scoreless for the first nine innings of the contest as starters Eric Lassiter of Samford and Shawn Kelley of Austin Peay pitched 9.0 strong innings each.

Samford plated the game's lone run in the bottom of the 10th inning when Michael Marseco singled to drive in Kyle Krebs, who came in the game as a pinch runner for Luke Peavy who had reached base on an Austin Peay error.

Chandler Tidwell pitched the 10th inning for Samford to earn the win on the mound. In Lassiter's nine-inning performance, he allowed no runs on eight hits, striking out six batters and walking just one. At the plate for Samford, Parker Gargis went 4-for-4. Marseco went 2-for-5 with an RBI for the Bulldogs.

APSU's Kelley took the loss, giving up one unearned run on seven hits, while striking out 10 batters. Jacob Crass went 3-for-5, and Will Hogue went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Govs.

In game two, Samford built a 3-1 lead with two runs in the first inning and one in the third. In the first inning, John Morgan scored Samford's first run on an error. The final run of the inning scored when Garrett Rice tripled to drive in Gargis for a 2-1 Samford lead. Peavy singled to drive in Morgan for the run in the third inning for a 3-1 Samford lead.

Austin Peay came back to tie the game with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. Brandon Munsey scored the Govs' first run of the inning when Cody Youngblood reached base on a Samford error. Crass then doubled to drive in Youngblood to tie the score at 3-3.

Samford plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth to make the final score 4-3. Louis Rojas scored the run from third base when Peavy grounded into a double play.

David Knapp pitched 6.0 innings, giving up one earned run on seven hits to pick up the win. Joseph Edens got the Govs out in order in the final inning to earn his sixth save of the season. At the plate, Samford was led by Rice, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Marseco also went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bulldogs.

Austin Peay's Matt Reynolds pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits to take the loss for the Govs. Ryan Gilboy went 2-for-3 with an RBI at the plate for Austin Peay.

Samford will return to action on Friday, April 14, when the Bulldogs start a three-game OVC series at Southeast Missouri.
