BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford's Trey Moody went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI to lead the Bulldog baseball team to a 10-8 win over Austin Peay Saturday night at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

"We did a great job of hitting tonight," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "I was really impressed with the way Austin Peay fought the entire game. They are a very good team, and this was a big win for us."

With the win, Samford remains in first place in the Ohio Valley Conference at 6-1 in league play. The Bulldogs are 16-15 overall. Austin Peay falls to 19-10 overall and 4-3 in the OVC.

Samford's Josh Ehmke (5-2) pitched 7.0 inning, giving up just two earned runs on seven hits to pick up the win. Ehmke struck out 12 batters while walking just three. Joseph Edens got the final out for his fifth save of the season. Behind Moody at the plate, Luke Peavy went 3-for-5 with an RBI. John Morgan, Bear Burnett and Michael Marseco collected two hits each for Samford. Louis Rojas homered in a 1-for-4 performance.

Austin Peay's Rowdy Hardy (6-1), last season's OVC Pitcher of the Year, surrendered nine runs on 13 hits over 4.1 innings to take the loss for the Govs. Cody Youngblood went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead Austin Peay. Ryan Kane drove in two runs for the Govs.

Samford jumped out to an early 4-0 lead with a run in the first inning, two in the second and one in the third. Rojas homered to center field for the first-inning run. Moody singled up the middle to drive in Burnett and Peavy in the second for a 3-0 Samford lead. The run in the third scored when Burnett singled to drive in Garrett Rice for a four-run Bulldog lead.

 

 

After Austin Peay plated a run in the top of the fourth inning, Samford answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to push its lead to 7-1. Parker Gargis drove in two runs and Peavy drove in one in the fourth for the Bulldogs.

Samford plated two more runs in the fifth inning to make the score 9-1. Moody hit a home run with Marseco on base for Samford's eighth and ninth runs of the game.

Austin Peay cut Samford's lead to 9-3 with two runs in the seventh inning. Kane singled to drive in Jacob Crass and Andrew Clement for APSU's runs in the seventh.

Samford made the score 10-3 with a run in the bottom of the seventh. Matt Alling singled to drive in Marseco with Samford's final run of the game.

Samford had to hold on in the final inning as the Governors plated five runs in the top of the ninth to make the final score 10-8. Brandon Munsey, James Ray, Will Hogue, Ryan Gilboy and Matt Smith each drove in a run for the Governors in the final inning.

Samford and Austin Peay will play a doubleheader on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The teams will play two seven-inning contests.
