Ninth-Inning Runs Lift Baseball To 4-1 Win At Austin Peay

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Samford's Wayne Miller doubled to drive in two runs in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Bulldog baseball team to a 4-1 win Saturday afternoon at Austin Peay. With the score tied at 1-1 in the top of the ninth inning, Luke Peavy reached base on an Austin Peay error to lead the inning off. Bear Burnett then singled and John Morgan moved the runners to second and third base on a sacrifice bunt. After Joseph Ballew was intentionally walked to load the bases, Miller doubled down the left-field line to drive in pinch runner Drew Reagan and Burnett, and Ballew scored on an error for the 4-1 lead. With the win, Samford improves to 16-17 overall and 3-6 in Ohio Valley Conference play. Austin Peay drops to 18-13 overall and 5-4 in league play. The win gives Samford its first win of an OVC series this season. For the game, Miller was 2-for-4 with three RBI. Michael Marseco was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Bulldogs. Josh Ehmke pitched 8.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits to earn the win. Joseph Edens pitched the final inning to earn his eighth save of the season. For Austin Peay, Tyler Farrar went 2-for-4. Will Hogue drove in the Governors' lone run of the game with a solo home run. Ryne Mantooth pitched 9.0 innings, giving up four runs on six hits to take the loss on the mound. Austin Peay jumped on top first with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Hogue hit a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 APSU lead. Samford came back with a run in the top of the seventh inning to tie the score at 1-1. Miller singled to drive in Morgan, who had been hit by a pitch earlier in the inning.
Samford will return to action on Tuesday, April 10, when the Bulldogs play at Troy. The game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start from Troy's Riddle-Pace Field. |
