CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -The Samford baseball team split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader at Austin Peay Sunday afternoon. Austin Peay won the first game, 3-2, while Samford took game two by a score of 5-3.

In game two, Austin Peay (15-11, 2-4 OVC) jumped on top early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Cody Youngblood scored the game's first run when Chris Hyde reached base on a fielder's choice. With the bases loaded, Jake Peterson singled to drive in Jared Walker to take an early 2-0 lead.

Samford (7-18, 2-4 OVC) came back with three runs in the top of the third inning to take a 3-2 lead. Bill Whitehead walked and Chet McDonough doubled to start the inning. John Morgan then grounded out to second base to score Whitehead to cut the Governors' lead to 2-1. Justin Worthington then reached on a bunt single to drive in McDonough to tie the score. Worthington then scored the go-ahead run on an Austin Peay error.

The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth inning to push their lead to 4-2. After Trey Moody and Parker Gargis hit back-to-back singles, Whitehead singled to left field to drive in Gargis for a two-run Samford lead.

Samford added a run in the top of the seventh to make the score 5-2. Morgan scored when Bear Burnett walked with the bases loaded. Austin Peay added one final run to make the final score 5-3.

For Samford in game two, Joseph Edens pitched 6.0 innings, giving up one earned run on five hits to pick up the win. Michael Neimkin pitched the final inning to earn his second save of the season. Morgan, Worthington, Burnett and Whitehead drove in a run each in the win.

 

 

In game one, Austin Peay's Brett Luther singled to left field to drive in Will Hogue with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Governors the 3-2 win.

Austin Peay struck first in game one with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After Youngblood singled and Luther doubled, Walker singled up the middle to bring Youngblood and Luther in to score for a 2-0 APSU lead.

Samford came back with two runs in the top of the fifth inning to tie the score at 2-2. Gargis and Moody started the inning with back-to-back singles. After Gargis moved to third base and Moody moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, McDonough singled to left field to drive in Gargis and Moody to tie the game.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Hogue singled and Youngblood walked with two outs to set the stage for Luther's game-winning hit.

For Samford in game one, Moody went 2-for-3 and McDonough drove in two runs in a 1-for-2 performance. Stephen Artz pitched the complete game, giving up three runs on eight hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
