BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic swept Saturday's games of its Trans America Athletic Conference series with Samford, winning 4-3 and 6-3 at FAU Stadium on Saturday.
FAU edged the Bulldogs 4-3 in an extra-inning affair in game one of Saturday's double header, then erupted for six runs over two innings to win the twin bill 6-3 and claim the series 2-1..
First baseman LJ Biernbaum went 2-for-3 and scored in the bottom of the eighth to give FAU (24-14, 4-5) the extra-inning win over Samford (8-20, 2-7) in game one. Samford led 3-1 heading into the FAU seventh, but the Blue Wave used three singles and a sacrifice bunt to score twice and tie the game, 3-3. Biernbaum scored the game winner after he singled and Mike Valdes followed with another single to advance him to second. A sacrifice bunt moved Biernbaum to third, and a fly out to left fielder Cory Sumner with one out scored the game-winner.
Samford scored all of its runs in the second on two hits and an error by FAU second baseman Rusty Brown. Brown's error allowed Major Allred to reach base, and Heath Owen doubled down the left field line to score Allred for a 1-0 lead. Michael Collins walked with one out, and Richard Bishop singled to left center to score Owen, and Samford led 2-0. Collins' steal of home gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead, but Brown led off the FAU second with a solo home run to cut the lead to 3-1.
Derek Tharpe (1-5) pitched a complete game and took the loss for Samford, allowing four earned runs while walking only two and striking out five. Joe Denson led the Bulldogs offensively with a 2-for-3 outing. Matt O'Brien (2-0) got the win for FAU, and Biernbaum was the Blue Wave's offensive leader.
In game two, Samford led 1-0 as
Robert Evans doubled, moved to third on a
Grant Caldwell single and scored on a wild pitch by FAU starter O'Brien.
But FAU did its damage in the second and third innings, pounding out eight of its 10 hits over two innings and scoring six runs, five earned, on Samford starter Charlie Crabbe (2-1). The Bulldogs got two runs back in the fourth, sparked by a one-out home run by Allred, his second of the season. Eric Hollis followed Allred with a single and moved to second on a failed pickoff attempt by O'Brien. Collins singled to advance Hollis to third, and the freshman catcher scored on an error by FAU shortstop Bobby Spano to cut the lead to the final outcome, 6-3.
Dennis Thomas replaced Crabbe in the fourth, allowing only two hits while fanning two and walking two the rest of the way. Crabbe took the loss for Samford, while O'Brien picked up his second win of the day and third of the season.
Robert Evans and Hollis each went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs and scored once. Alex Fernandez and Brown each tallied 2-for-3 outings for the Blue Wave.
Samford returns to Birmingham for a five-game homestand, hosting on Auburn on April 3, UAB on April 4 and UCF for a three-game TAAC series, April 6-7.
