BOCA RATON, Fla. - Cory Sumner went 4-for 5 and scored two runs and Samford pounded out 12 hits as the Bulldogs defeated Florida Atlantic, 6-3, in Trans America Athletic Conference baseball Friday.
Samford (8-18, 2-5) outhit the Blue Wave of FAU (22-14, 2-5) 12 to 9 and hit .333 (12-for-36) as a team to gain its first TAAC road win of the season. Robert Evans homered for Samford, his fifth of the season, in the top of the ninth to score Sumner and to secure the Bulldogs' win. The top of the order went 8-for-14 and did the damage for Samford, as Evans also went 2-for-5 batting second and Grant Caldwell followed in the three spot with a 2-for-4 effort.
FAU (22-14, 2-5)scored first in the second on two hits and a Samford error, but the Bulldogs responded in the fourth with two hits of their own, one a Caldwell single which scored Sumner from second. FAU scored two runs on three hits in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, but Sumner then singled and drove in Richard Bishop in the fifth, and Robert Evans scored from third as Sae Evans was thrown out in a double steal. After six, the game was tied, 3-3.
Samford added a run in the eighth as Caldwell singled, then advanced to second on a fielder's choice. A Joe Denson single scored Caldwell from third, giving the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead before Robert Evans homered in the ninth.
Senior Ty Dedmon started the game and pitched four and third innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out four. Major Allred (4-4) got his fourth win of the season, replacing Dedmon in the fifth. Allred allowed five hits but only one run and he fanned two. Petersen Benjamin pitched a complete game for FAU, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits and striking out five.

Michael Collins each went 1-for-4 for Samford. Shaen O'Connor went 2-for-3 and Gabe Somarriba and LJ Birnbaum each went 2-for-4 for the Blue Wave.
The two teams continue the series on Saturday with a double header beginning at Noon (CDT).
