Brown's Last Minute Heroics Lifts UCF over Samford, 7-6

Orlando, Fla. - Dee Brown's sacrifice fly to center field scored David Mann with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to lift UCF over Samford, 7-6 at Jay Bergman Field Friday night. Samford dropped to 5-8 in the Atlantic Sun while UCF improved to 6-1 in the conference.

Brown went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the game. Junior right-hander Frank Allen Yeilding gave up six runs on six hits while striking out 10 before giving way to Ehren Wassermann who was credited with the loss.

Samford took a 1-0 lead in the first when Cory Sumner led off with a single and scored on Major Allred's RBI single. The Bulldogs added two runs in the third. Sumner doubled and scored on another Allred RBI single. Grant Caldwell then scored on Eric Hollis' sacrifice fly to center field giving Samford a 3-0 lead.

UCF cut into the lead when Jason Graham, who walked, scored on Mike Myer's fielder's choice, making it 3-1. Samford extended its lead to 4-1 on Sumner's sacrifice fly scoring Eli Iorg in the fourth.

The Golden Knights tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with three runs on two hits. After Adam Miller scored on an infield single, Mann's infield hit scored Jeremy Frost and Graham.

UCF took the lead in the bottom of the fifth on Brown's two-run home run to left field, making it 6-4. Samford rallied in the top of the seventh. UCF reliever David Shipps walked the bases loaded. With one out, Hollis singled up the middle to score Robert Evans and Sumner, tying the game at 6.

Zach Sutton picked up the win for UCF. Sutton pitched one inning giving up no hits and no runs.

 

 

Sumner, Allred and Hollis each had two hits for Samford. Hollis also had three RBI while Allred had two RBI. Mann, Brown and Graham each finished with two hits for UCF.

Samford and UCF complete the series Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. (ET).
