DeLAND--Robert Evans went 4-for-7 and Joe Denson and Sae Evans each went 3-for-6 in losing causes on Saturday, as 14th-ranked Stetson swept a Trans America Athletic Conference doubleheader from Samford, winning 11-3 and 7-1, Saturday at Melching Field at Conrad Park.
The Hatters (23-3, 6-0 TAAC) swept the three-game series from the Bulldogs (6-18, 1-5) after winning Friday's opener 4-2.
In game one, Robert Evans doubled to left field then scored on a Hatter error, and Samford led 1-0. But, in the bottom of the first, Stetson scored five runs, thanks in part to three Bulldog errors. Frank Corr had an RBI single and Bryan
Zenchyk singled in a pair of runs and Stetson's other runs scored on a fielder's choice and a steal of home as part of a double steal. After one inning, Stetson led 5-1.
Stetson added two more runs in the second on an RBI double by Vinnie Rinaldi and a run-scoring single by Brian Snyder. Snyder's single chased Samford starter Major Allred (3-4), whose replacement, Charlie Crabbe, finished the game for the Bulldogs allowing four earned runs on nine hits.
Leading 7-1, the Hatters scored two more in the third on single by Rusty Beale and Josh Laws for a 9-1 lead. Stetson added a run in the fourth and Andy Wilson's solo homer in the fifth made it 11-1.
Brian Sullivan (3-1) pitched six innings for Stetson, allowing two earned runs on eight hits. After allowing a unearned run in the first, Sullivan settled down until the Bulldogs plated two in the sixth. After Sullivan hit Philip Holmes, Allred singled up the middle and the runners advanced on a groundout by Ricky Honeycutt. A single by Joe Denson's single scored both, making the final 11-3 margin.
In game two, Jason Oglesby (6-0) kept Samford in check and Corr continued to burn Bulldog pitching. After going 4-for-4 in each of the first two games of the series, Corr ripped a triple into the left-field corner to score Josh Laws for a 1-0
lead.
After Corr's hit, the Hatter offense was held in check by Samford starter Derrick Tharpe (1-4) until the fourth. But Oglesby was also on his game, facing only two extra Bulldog batters through the first six innings, thanks in part to a pair of double plays and a pickoff.
The Hatters touched Tharpe in the fourth with a two-out rally. Rusty Beale's bases-loaded single scored one run and Jeff Christy plated two more with a double, giving Stetson a 4-0 lead. Snyder drilled a two-run homer in the fifth for a 6-0 Hatter lead and Stetson added an unearned run in the sixth for a 7-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh, as Josh Rhodes doubled, then scored on a single by Eric Hollis after Jason Livermore reached on an error. Denson got his second hit of the day through the right side, but Christy threw out Jason Livermore at the plate for the final out.
Denson also added two RBI and Evans a run scored for the Bulldogs. Corr finished the day with four single, a double, triple, two runs scored and two RBI.
