Baseball Falls At Memphis, 18-9

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Samford baseball team dropped an18-9 decision at the University of Memphis Tuesday night.

For Samford at the plate, Wayne Miller was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Bear Burnett and John Morgan drove in two runs each. Matthew Bennett hit his first collegiate home run in the game.

Taylor Hammond took the loss on the mound for Samford. Hammond pitched 1.2 innings in relief, giving up 10 runs on nine hits. Hammond was one of six pitchers used by Samford in the game.

Memphis was led at the plate by Chad Zurcher and Tyler Huelsing with three hits each. Trey Wiedman drove in four runs for the Tigers. Brach Davis pitched 5.0 innings, giving up seven runs on six hits to pick up the win for the Tigers.

Samford plated three runs in each of the first two innings, but Memphis answered with four runs each in its half of the first two innings for an 8-6 lead. The Tigers added six runs in the third inning to push their lead to 14-6.

Samford plated a run in the fourth when Bennett hit his first collegiate home run to cut the Memphis lead to 14-7. Memphis came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to push its lead to 17-7.

Samford added a run in the top of the sixth to make the score 17-8, but Memphis came back with a run to make the score 18-8. Samford plated one run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 18-9.

The teams will play again Wednesday at 4 p.m.
