BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to win 8-4 in game one of a Trans America Athletic Conference double header with Campbell Saturday, but allowed six Campbell runs in the fifth inning of the twinbill to lose 9-3 at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Campbell (12-7, 2-1) led 4-1 with one out in the bottom of the sixth in game one when Samford (5-14, 1-2) made its charge. After Cory Sumner and Robert Evans singled on Campbell starter Wes Hepler, reliever Bradley Stancil hit Grant Caldwell with a pitch loading the bases. Heath Owen then reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Sumner on a controversial call at home plate. Jason Livermore scored Robert Evans on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 4-3, and a wild pitch advanced Owen and Caldwell to second and third, respectively. Eric Hollis then walked, loading the bases and Joe Denson walked to score Caldwell and tie the game, 4-4. Still with bases loaded and two outs, Michael Collins reached on an error by Campbell right fielder Nic Carter, scoring Hollis and Owen and giving Samford the lead 6-4. Sumner then doubled to score Collins and Denson, and the Bulldogs led 8-4. In the inning, Samford recorded seven runs on three hits and Campbell committed two costly errors.
In game two it was Campbell who recorded the big inning, breaking a 2-1 game open with six runs on three hits in the fifth inning. After Samford starter Ty Dedmon got Daniel Mouton on a pop out, Ray Caffee and Edison Lee walked, Bradley Coates flied out and Tony Della Costa walked to load the bases with two outs. Jeff Huff doubled to center on Weeks to score all three runners, and the Camels quickly led 5-1. Middle Reliever Shane Weeks replaced Dedmon, giving up a single to Adam Hawes that scored Huff. Hawes then stole second, Weeks walked Nic Carter and Chris Wiley doubled to score Carter and Hawes and the Camels led 8-1.
A sacrifice fly by Jeff Huff scored Lee in the Campbell sixth and the Bulldogs scored two in the bottom of the seventh for the final of 9-3.
Denson and Sae Evans led the Bulldogs offensively on Saturday, Denson finishing 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI in two games, and Evans went 3-for-7 with a RBI and a run scored. For the series Grant Caldwell hit .667, going 2-for-3 from the plate with a home run and two runs scored, while Sae Evans went 5-for-11 with a run scored, a double, and a RBI in three games against the Camels.
Samford will play its next nine games on the road, beginning with Vanderbilt in Nashville on Tues., March 20 at 7 p.m.
