BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Tony Della Costa homered, recorded four RBI and scored three runs to lead Campbell past Samford 13-4 in both teams' Trans America Athletic Conference season opener at Joe Lee Griffin Field Friday night.
Campbell (11-6, 1-0) scored 13 runs, nine earned, on 13 hits, and took advantage of Samford miscues to go 1-0 in the conference and to win their third road game of the season. Samford managed 12 hits against Camel pitchers Andy Wade and Derrick Scott, but stranded 12 runners on base and committed four errors that led to four unearned runs for Campbell. Left-hander Derek Tharpe (1-3) got the start and the loss for Samford, allowing nine hits and eight runs with five strikeouts and only one walk.
Campbell led 3-0 in the third before Robert Evans and Grant Caldwell belted back-to-back solo home runs to keep the Bulldogs close, 3-2. The Camels added a run in the fourth on four hits, then erupted for four runs in the fifth on three hits, including a double by Della Costa and a single by Jeff Huff, to lead 8-2. The Camels added two runs in the sixth and seventh and scored one in the top of the ninth. Samford's Major Allred scored on a fielder's choice single from Sae Evans in the eighth, and the Bulldogs added one in the ninth on three hits from Robert Evans, Josh Rhodes and Heath Owen.
Robert Evans went 2-for-5 with a homer and scored twice to lead the Bulldogs, while Allred also went 2 for 5 with a run scored and Sae Evans was 2-for-4. Shortstop Bradley Coates went 3-for 5 to lead the Camels along with Della Costa.
Jared Smith pitched two and a third innings in middle relief for the Bulldogs, allowing four runs on three hits while walking five.
Matt Fields closed out the final two innings for Samford with one run on one hit and striking out four.
Samford and Campbell continue their series on Saturday with a double header beginning at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
