Samford Sweeps UT-Martin
March 13, 2002
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Grant Caldwell, Jeff Stephens and Michael Collins each went 3-for-3 in game one of the doubleheader and Major Allred drove in two runs in the second game as Samford swept a doubleheader from UT-Martin, 24-3 and 2-1 in college baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field. "I thought both games were played very well. We got on a hitting streak in the first game and hitting is contagious," head coach Tim Parenton said. "I'm proud of our guys. We hung in there especially in the second game. It was good for us to win a close game. We needed that since we just lost a couple of close games on the road." The Bulldogs (11-8) scored 24 runs on 22 hits for their largest output of the season in game one. After the Skyhawks (3-11) took a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Brad Meadows, Samford rattled off 21 unanswered runs. The Bulldogs hit five home runs in the contest and used a nine-run third inning to pull away from UT-Martin. Freshman right-hander Scott Fowler (1-1) picked up his first career win as a Bulldog. Fowler gave up one earned run through four innings and recorded four strikeouts. Cory Sumner led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run to even the game at 1-1. Sae Evans two RBI double put the Bulldogs on top 3-1. Samford extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the second on Collins first career home run.
Samford's nine-run third inning was capped off with Robert Evans' two-RBI single, Allred's two-run home run to left center and Kip Snowden's two-run home run to left field and Heath Owen's solo homer. The Bulldogs added three runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and three runs in the bottom of the sixth.
UT-Martin's final two runs of the game came on Meadows two-run homer to left field in the top of the sixth. Jason Venczel (0-3) took the loss for the Skyhawks, giving up seven earned runs on six hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Sumner finished 3-for-6 with one RBI and four runs scored. Stephens also had two RBI and three runs scored. Josh Rhodes and Allred each had two hits and four RBI. Sae Evans was 2-for-2 with two RBI while Joe Denson, Snowden, Robert Evans and Heath Owen each had one hit. Meadows and Donnie Corey each had two hits to pace UT-Marrtin. In game two, UT-Martin broke open the scoring in the second inning when Meadows scored from third after Loren Turner hit into a double play to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead. But Samford answered with two runs in the bottom of the third. Allred singled up the middle scoring Sae Evans and Sumner for the 2-1 advantage. Freshman right-hander Alan Bryan (2-3) then held UT-Martin scoreless over the next four innings before giving way to Ehren Wassermann, who struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded, to get his third save of the season. Bryan gave up one run on four hits through 6.1 innings of work and struck out four. Corey took the loss for the Skyhawks. He pitched six innings and allowed the two runs on eight hits while striking out five. Eric Hollis finished 2-for-2 while Sumner, Sae Evans, Snowden, Robert Evans and Eli Iorg each added one hit. Brian Jordan led the Skyhawks going 2-for-2 at the plate. Samford will host Atlantic Sun rival and No. 25 Stetson this weekend in a three-game conference series. Friday's game will now be a doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m. The final game of the series will be at 1 p.m, Saturday, weather permitting. |
