BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Matt Lambert and Connor Robertson each hit a home run and went 2-for-four as Birmingham-Southern defeated Samford 6-2 in nonconference baseball action at Joe Lee Griffin Field Tuesday night.
Samford (4-12) led 2-0 in the first inning when sophomore Robert Evans hit his second home run of the season off BSC starter Derek Griffith, scoring Grant Caldwell who had reached on a hit-by-pitch. Birmingham-Southern (19-2) answered with solo blasts from Lambert and Robertson in the second off Samford starter Ty Dedmon, then took advantage of two Samford errors and hits by Robertson and Jason Avery in the third to bump the score to 4-2.
More Bulldog mistakes led to another Panther run in fourth, as Adam Pease singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then advanced to third on Samford's third error of the game. A single by John Driskill scored Pease to give BSC a 5-2 lead, and the Panthers added their last run in the sixth as Driskill singled, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored from third after a wild pitch from Bulldog reliever Jared Smith.
BSC posted 12 hits, no errors and stranded 10 base runners to Samford's seven hits, three errors and six left on base. Chad Durden (2-1) got the win for the Panthers, while Major Allred (2-3) took the loss for the Bulldogs. Robert Evans led theBulldogs by going 3-for-4 with a home run, while Driskill and Avery also went 2-for-5 along with Lambert and Robertson for the Panthers.
The two teams will play again tomorrow at 7 p.m. at Birmingham-Southern.
