Freshmen Lead Baseball to Split with Campbell

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Pat Murray pitched a complete-game five-hit shutout for Campbell in the first game of the doubleheader and Samford's Eric Hollis, Jeff Dils and Justin Klinger each had two hits in the second game as the Bulldogs and Camels split the Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader, 7-0 and 4-1, at Joe Lee Griffin Field Saturday afternoon. Samford moved to 4-11 and 2-4 in the A-Sun while Campbell fell to 5-10 and 3-6 in the A-Sun.

In game two, Samford's freshmen helped the Bulldogs to the 4-1 win. Klinger, Hunter Tubbs and Dils combined to go 5-for-7 with two runs scored and one RBI. Freshman right-hander Chandler Tidwell (2-1) relieved starter Robert Evans and allowed one run on four hits in 4 2/3 innings pitched while striking out four to earn his second win of the season. Andrew Barrows (0-1) took the loss for Campbell. Barrows relieved starter Matt Kleweno in the fifth and gave up three runs in 1 1/3 innings of work.

Samford took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Klinger doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on Tubbs' single. Klinger scored when Robert Evans hit into a fielder's choice.

Tom Rispoli's solo home run in the top of the fourth tied the game 1-1.

The Bulldogs retook the lead 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth. Dils singled and stole second. Joe Denson singled up the middle scoring Dils. Samford extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Hollis singled up the middle and scored on Heath Owen's RBI single. Dils singled in Owen for the final run.
 

 

Dils finished the game 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Klinger went 2-for-2 and Hollis was 2-for-3. Denson, Owen and Tubbs each had one hit. Rispoli went 1-for-3 with one RBI for Campbell.

Murray held the Bulldogs to five hits while striking out three for the 7-0 win in the first game of the doubleheader. Jeff Blick went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the Camels. Chris Wiley and Jason Brown each had two hits for the Camels.

Campbell scored two runs on three hits and one Samford error to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Blick's two-RBI single scored Wiley and Brown. The Camels made it 5-0 with three runs on six hits in the top of the fourth. Derek Barrows singled and scored on Kyle Ellenz's double. Sal Deanda and Wiley each added RBI singles giving the Camels the five run lead.

Josh Cotten's two run home run made for the final two runs in the top of the seventh. Frank Allen Yeilding (1-3) took the loss for Samford. Yeilding gave up four earned runs in seven innings of work while striking out three. Matt Alling, Sae Evans, Owen, Richard Bishop and Dils each had one hit.

Samford hits the road Tuesday for its first of a five-game road trip. The Bulldogs play at Middle Tennessee State Tuesday and Wednesday at 3 p.m. before heading to Belmont next weekend for their third A-Sun Conference Series.
