BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Major Allred posted a career high 15 strikeouts and Robert Evans hit a two-run homer to seal Samford's 3-2 win over Vanderbilt at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Wednesday.
Allred (2-2) pitched a complete game, allowing two runs and only one walk to go with his 15 strikeouts. The win gives Samford Head Coach Tim Parenton five straight wins against Vanderbilt and the second straight win over an SEC opponent this season. Samford defeated Mississippi State 9-3 in Starkville on March 1.
Samford (4-8) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a perfectly executed hit-and-run between Evans and Jason Livermore. Evans reached first with a single then advanced to second on a passed ball off Vandy catcher David Wallace. With two outs, Evans broke for third and Livermore poked a bast hit into left field, scoring Evans.
Evans then came up big again in the Bulldog fourth, hitting his first home run of the season to score Philip Holmes and to give Samford a 3-0 lead. Allred held the Commodores scoreless until the sixth inning, when Karl Nonemaker and Ashley Freeman singled and a sacrifice bunt by Rob Bedwell advanced the runners to second and third. A looper to left field by Worth Scott scored both runners and Samford's lead was cut to 3-2.
Allred struck out seven of the last 11 batters he faced, including Kevin Geshke swinging to end the game. Evans went 2-for-3 with the home run and scored two runs to lead Samford.
The Bulldogs travel to Thibodaux, La., for a three-game series with Nicholls State on March 9-10.
