STARKVILLE, Miss. --- Samford pounded out 14 hits against five MSU pitchers and posted a 9-3 win over Mississippi State (3-4)Thursday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
Samford (3-8) got six of those hits in the first four innings off freshman lefthander Paul Maholm (0-1), and parlayed three Mississippi State fielding errors into a 5-2 lead. Robert Evans and Sae Evans had three hits each and Major Allred launched a solo home run in the third inning to lead Samford, coached by former Mississippi State player and assistant coach Tim Parenton.
Mississippi State also collected 14 hits, all singles off Samford starter Ty Dedmon and relief pitcher Derek Tharpe (1-1). Tharpe replaced Dedmon in the fifth and limited State to just one run over the final 4-2/3innings. Samford allowed just one hit in 15 RBI opportunities and forced State to strand a season-high 15 runners on base.
Collins Hughes, Todd Nicholas, Josh Wooten and Steven Dowe followed Maholm on the mound for State. MSU's top two hitters missed Thursday's game with injuries, catcher Jason Burkley (neck) and outfielder Josh West (foot). State also played the final three innings of the game without head coach PatMcMahon, who was ejected from the game by plate umpire John Smith with theBulldogs batting in the sixth inning.
Samford returns to action at home on March 7 when the Bulldogs host Vanderbilt at 6 p.m.
