Baseball Wins At 19th-Ranked Ole Miss, 3-2

Feb. 22, 2006

Box Score

OXFORD, Miss. - Samford junior pitcher Eric Lassiter pitched 7.2 innings, giving up just one earned run and striking out seven batters to lead the Bulldog baseball team to a 3-2 win at 19th-ranked Ole Miss Wednesday afternoon.

"I was extremely proud of the way our guys played today," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "I didn't feel like we played well yesterday, but we came out today and out-played them.

"I was proud of the way Eric Lassiter pitched today," Dunn said. "We didn't swing the bats particularly well, but I was encouraged how we continued to get two-out hits."

For Samford (3-2) at the plate, Louis Rojas and Bear Burnett each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Luke Peavy also went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs. Daniel Davidson pitched the final 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the season. For Lassiter, a junior college transfer, the game marked his first start for Samford.

Ole Miss (3-1) was led by Zack Cozart and Cody Overbeck, driving in one run apiece. Brett Bukvich took the loss on the mound for the Rebels, pitching 5.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits.

The win was the first for Samford over a ranked opponent since the Bulldogs won at 21st-ranked Auburn, 9-6, on Mar. 29, 2005.

Ole Miss struck first when Overbeck hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the second inning to give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.

Samford came back to take the lead for good with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Rojas singled to right-center field to drive in John Morgan to the game at 1-1. The Bulldogs took the lead when Burnett singled to drive in Rojas to make the score 2-1.

The Bulldogs added a run in the seventh inning to push their lead to 3-1. Trey Moody singled through the right side of the infield to drive in Peavy for the two-run Samford lead.

The Rebels came back with a run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 3-2. Cozart singled up the middle to drive in Justin Henry for the final run of the game.

Samford will return to action on Friday, Feb. 24, when the Bulldogs play host to Montevallo at 4:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
