BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Samford stranded three base runners in the last inning for the second consecutive game and Eastern Kentucky downed the Bulldogs 6-5 to complete a three-game sweep at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Sunday.

Samford (1-5) loaded the bases in its last at bat for the second consecutive game, but with two outs Philip Holmes flied out deep to left field and Eastern Kentucky (3-0) completed its sweep of the Bulldogs.

Samford led 4-0 early as Robert Evans was hit by a pitch and scored on a Philip Holmes single in the first inning and Sae Evans blasted a three-run home run in the second that scored Michael Collins and Ricky Honeycutt. The Colonels scored in the third when Greg Estep singled and eventually scored on an Aaron Williams fielder's choice single. EKU cut the lead to 4-2 in the fourth as Tim Booghier singled, advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on an error by Bulldog catcher Grant Caldwell in Booghier's stolen base attempt at third

Samford answered in the sixth inning with two outs as Sae Evans singled, stole second and scored on a single by Cory Sumner. EKU added two runs in the seventh and in the eighth off of middle relievers Joe Denson and Shane Weeks, but a one-out single by Josh Rhodes and a Robert Evans walk put the Bulldogs in business in the bottom of the ninth. Evans was out at second and Jason Livermore reached on a fielder's choice, and pinch-runner Richard Bishop advanced to second on a wild pitch from EKU reliever Kevin Murnane. Major Allred walked to load the bases for Holmes, who flied out to the left field warning track to end the game

Chris Albright (1-0) got the win for the Colonels and freshman Derek Tharpe (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs. Sae Evans went 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBI and Cory Sumner went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead Samford. Tim Booghier was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the Colonels

Samford travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a three-game series Feb. 23-25, then returns home to host Middle Tennessee State on Feb. 27 and Alabama A&M on Feb. 28.
