Strong Pitching Performance Lifts Baseball Past Arkansas State, 2-0

Feb. 17, 2007

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Trent Hill, in his first start at Samford, pitched 7.0 innings, giving up no runs and just two hits to lead the Bulldog baseball team to a 2-0 win over Arkansas State in game two of a three-game series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Hill, a transfer from Mississippi State, struck out seven batters, while walking just one. Joseph Edens earned the save pitching a perfect final inning for the Bulldogs. David Knapp sat the Indians down in order in the eighth inning, setting the stage for Edens.

"The last two days all of our guys on the mound have been outstanding," Samford head coach Casey Dunn said. "I don't think we could expect any more out of those guys than what they have given us.

"Trent did an outstanding job today, on a limited pitch count going seven innings," Dunn said. "Davey came in and did a good job setting up for Joseph, and Joseph did what he did all year last year and finished them off for us."

For Samford (2-0) at the plate, Bear Burnett went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI. John Morgan also drove in a run for the Bulldogs.

Arkansas State (0-2) was led at the plate by Brandon Eller and Grey Avant, collecting one hit each for the Indians. Jacob Maggard (0-1) took the loss on the mound, pitching 6.0 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits.

Samford plated its first run of the game in the second inning when Burnett doubled down the left-field line to drive in Louis Rojas. The game's final run was scored in the fourth inning when Morgan grounded out to short, driving in Rojas.

Samford and Arkansas State will conclude their three-game series with a game on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game can be heard locally on WVSU-FM 91.1, or worldwide on the internet at www.al.com/wvsu. Fans can also follow the game on in the internet via GameTracker at www.samfordsports.com
