THIBODAUX, La. -- Matt Overman held Samford to two runs in seven innings, and Brad Dantonio went 3-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, as Nicholls State beat Samford 14-4 Saturday at Ray E. Didier Field. The series wraps up Sunday at 1 p.m.

The game was scoreless through two-and-a-half innings, but in the bottom of the second the Colonels touched up starter Alan Bryan for four runs. Bryan (0-2) gave up four runs and five hits, struck out one and walked one in three innings.

The Bulldogs fell behind 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth before manufactured a run in the top of the fifth when Kip Snowden's single scored Matt Alling. The game went to the bottom of the seventh with the Colonels leading 6-2 when the wheels fell off for Samford. The Bulldogs gave up seven runs on seven hits, all with two outs, in the bottom of the seventh. The game was effectively over after that. Nicholls State scored one more time in the bottom of the eighth, and the Bulldogs scored twice in the top of the ninth to provide the final 14-4 margin.

The Bulldogs' defense deserted them, and they had five errors on the day. Samford had eight hits and left 11 runners on base. Nicholls State had 16 hits, one error, and left six on base.
