HAMMOND, La. Major Allred struck out eight batters in five innings and Cory Sumner went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Bulldogs to a 6-4 win over Southeastern Louisiana University in the final game of a three-game series Sunday.

Samford (1-2) scored three unearned runs in the second inning off Lions' starter Mark Weinmunson (0-1) as Jason Livermore reached base and advanced to second on a throwing error by Anthony Krajancic. Robert Evans drove in Livermore with an RBI double to right-center and Joe Denson later doubled to left to score Evans. Sae Evans followed with an RBI single that gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.

Southeastern (5-2) answered with a trio of runs in the bottom of the second as Dustin Weaver hit a two-run double down the left field line and Jesse Newell scored on a balk by Allred.

The Bulldogs padded their lead to 6-3 in the seventh inning when Grant Caldwell and Heath Owen scored on a two-out fielding error by the Lions' Phil George. Freshman Derek Tharpe, the fourth Samford pitcher of the game, tossed the final 2/3 inning to record his first career save for the Bulldogs.

Samford, which hosts Eastern Kentucky in the home opener at Joe Lee Griffin Field on Feb. 16, left nine runners on base and committed one error. All of Southeastern's runs were earned. Weaver and Jake Leba had two hits each for the Lions and Krajancic drove in a run with a bases loaded walk.
