HAMMOND, La. -- Strong pitching from Steve Trosclair and Josh Kaplan helped Southeastern Louisiana University take both games of a doubleheader from Samford by scores of 7-4 and 5-2 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Trosclair (2-0) scattered four hits and struck out nine in the opening game for Southeastern (5-1), while Kaplan (1-0) tossed 7 1/3 innings allowing five hits and striking out five. Samford, in its season-opening series, fell to 0-2.

In the opener, the Lions scored in the first inning on Anthony Krajancic's two-run home run off Robert Evans (0-1) before Matt Rogelstad forced in a run on a bases loaded walk in the second. Preston Hayes singled in the third scoring Chad Landry and added three runs in the fifth as Phil George was hit by a pitch, scoring Jake Leba, and Hayes and Landry scoring on an error by freshman shortstop Joe Denson.

Samford rallied for four runs in the seventh, but Watson struck out Danny Nelson for the save.

The Lions broke a scoreless tie in the nightcap when Jeremy Owen hit an infield single in the fourth inning off Ty Dedmon (0-1) that scored Aaron Lowe. Southeastern added two more runs in the frame as Hayes hit a sacrifice fly and Steve Labbe singled to right-center over a leaping Michael Collins, scoring Landry.

Lowe added an RBI double in the sixth for Southeastern and Joey Duhe added an RBI double in the eighth. Watson picked up his second save of the day when he got Eric Hollis to ground out.

Both teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday at Noon, a nine-inning make-up game from Friday night's rainout.
