Cross Country Opens 2008 Season At Belmont Opener

Sept. 4, 2008

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The Samford University cross country team opens the 2008 season this Friday, Sept. 4, at the Belmont Opener. The meet will take place at Percy Warner Park in Nashville, Tenn., with the women participating in a 4K run starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men in a 5K run at 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs just entered their first year a member of the prestigious Southern Conference and are under the direction of first-year head coach Rod Tiffin, assisted by Chad James, Lauren Blankenship and Errol Hickenbottom.

Both Samford teams were picked to finish sixth in the Southern Conference Championships this year. The Bulldogs lost their star runner last year in Lauren Blankenship but gained her as an assistant coach.

The Samford women will be led this year by 2007 OVC Freshman of the Year Hillary Neal, 2007 All-OVC Second Teamer Lauren Pilcher and lone senior Katie Almand. They return seven women from the 2007 roster and welcome five newcomers. The Bulldog men will be led by fifth-year senior Bo Brawner, along with true seniors Cameron Bean and Michael Schwartz.

A full recap and results will be available on www.samfordsports.com upon the completion of the meet.
