Cross Country takes Second and Fourth at A-SUN Conference Championship

ATLANTA, Ga. -- - Samford's men's cross country team finished second while the women's team came in fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship Saturday morning at the Georgia Regional Hospital. The Bulldogs had five runners on the men's side finish in the top 10, but it wasn't enough to get by Georgia State which had three runners finish in the top five for a total of five runners in the top 15. Georgia State took the men's title with 35 points -- 24 points ahead of Samford (59 points).

Sophomore Brett Baddorf led the Bulldogs. Baddorf ran the 8K in 25:44.67 to finish ninth. Samford's next four runners finished 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th. Senior Andrew Spear recorded a time of 25:54 to finish 11th followed by freshman Bryan Baddorf (26:02, 12th), Chad Johnson (26:14, 13th) and Micah Stansell 26:16, 14th) rounding out the Bulldogs' scoring. Freshmen Nic Cowan (26:25, 18th), Mark Rowe (27:05, 27th), and junior Jeff Jonathan (27:23) also ran in the race for Samford.

Belmont's William Kemey won the individual conference title by running the course in 24:40. Belmont, Troy State, Troy State, UCF, Campbell, Mercer, Jacksonville State, Stetson, FAU and Jacksonville finished behind the Bulldogs in that order.

On the women's side, the Bulldogs couldn't overcome Georgia State, Belmont or UCF and finished fourth. Belmont ran away with the team title by scoring 32 points--33 more than second place Georgia State. Samford scored 95 team points.

Sophomore Brittney Mensen paced the team with a 10th place finish. Mensen ran the 5K in 18:36. Junior Erin Giesa and senior Alice McGough joined Mensen in the top 20. Giesa finished the race in 19:00.28 to place 17th while McGough finished one place behind her in a time of 19:02 to take 18th place. Senior Abbey McGough (19:11, 23rd) and junior Katie Flewellyn (19:21, 27th) also scored points for the Bulldogs. Senior Leah Reed (19:35, 30th), freshman Suzanne Walker (19:50) and senior Kimberly Leerssen (20:58) also ran the race for Samford.

 

 

Campbell's Heather Lee won the individual women's title with a time of 17:00.93.

The Bulldogs will next run in the NCAA South Regional hosted by the University of Alabama on Nov. 10.
