Sept. 3, 2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Samford University women's cross country team finished first, while the men placed fourth at the Belmont Opener on Friday. The women had 39 points to win their race, with Vanderbilt finishing second with 62 points. The Samford men registered 88 points in placing fourth. Belmont won on the men's side with 49 points. "I knew we were going to have a strong women's team," head coach Glenn McWaters said. "So, it wasn't a surprise that we performed well, but it was a surprise that we won by as much as we did. The men's team is still a young team, and I believe will be a very good team by the end of the year."

Bryan Baddorf finished fifth in the men's race with a time of 15:24.79

The women's team was led by Lauren Blankenship, who won the 4K race with a time of 14:24.62. Britney Almaguer placed seventh, running the course in 14:57.40. Robyn DeBenedet finished eighth overall with a time of 14:57.68. Michelle Brewer was ninth with a time of 15:01.12, while Jessica Brewer came in 14th at 15:06.16. Leading the men's team was Bryan Baddorf, who placed fifth with a time of 15:24.79 in the 5K race. Drew Anderwald was 12th in the men's race with a time of 15:36.95. Both teams will be back in action on September 11 when they participate in the Florida State Invitational in Tallahassee, Fla. The races begin at 7:30 p.m. and 8:10 p.m.
