Track and Field Signs Three
July 10, 2002 BIRMINGHAM - Samford University has added Jennifer Craig, Kelly Gaston and Steve Maddox to its list of signees that will begin competition in the 2003 season, head coach Glenn McWaters announced on Wednesday. Craig, from nearby Hoover High School, was undefeated in the 100 meters and 200 meters during her senior season. At the 2002 Alabama State Track and Field Championships, Craig won the 200 meters with a time of 24.38 and finished second in the 100 meters. Gaston, a graduate of Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, is a two-time Alabama state heptathlon champion who also won the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles at the 2002 Alabama State Track and Field Championships. Gaston also finished second in the high jump and third in the long jump and the triple jump.
Maddox is a sophomore transferring from Texas Tech University. The Carrolton, Texas, native finished third in the Footlocker South competition and competed in the Footlocker National Championships as one of the country's top 32 high school distance runners. Also as a high school senior Maddox was a 5A Texas State Cross Country Champion.
