Samford's Blankenship Earns Spot In NCAA Championships

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ---- Samford senior distance runner Lauren Blankenship was notified Tuesday that she will be competing in the NCAA Championships, June 11-14. Blankenship will run in the 5,000-meter race, the same race she placed seventh in just last weekend at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Blankenship's qualification came just after two competitors who were ranked above her declared that they would be running the 10,000-meter race instead of the 5,000 meters. The decision moved the senior up from eighth to fifth, earning her an automatic qualifying bid. The Alpharetta, Ga., native will run in the preliminaries Wednesday, June 11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. The top 16 runners advance to the finals and will compete for a national championship.
