COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Daniel Balena's mark of 197'06" in the javelin Saturday at the NCAA Regionals broke the sophomore's school record in his signature event, which he has owned since last season. Balena finished 12th out of 27 throwers on a chilly day at Jesse Owens Stadium.

Balena was Samford's lone representative at the NCAA Regionals, which he qualified for by winning the javelin at the Atlantic Sun Championships in April.

Saturday was the the fourth time Balena broke the javelin school record this season. A cross-country runner in high school, Balena plans to train for competition in the decathalon in 2004.
